Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
